The Barna Group has reported that evangelical churches are sliding to the left. They are leaving their roots. Below are some of the trends that we see taking place in rapid fashion in church after church. More than likely there is no turnaround seen on the horizon. Churches are becoming less theological. Doctrine is going by the wayside. Churches are becoming more ingrown and less outreach-oriented. More people are less interested in spiritual issues, and are more pragmatic in their Christianity. Churches are more social in their interests. Postmodern tolerance is winning over in the churches. The influence of Christianity on culture and individual lives is largely invisible. PS: On the issue of tolerance, it is one thing to be tolerant of the individual, but something else to be tolerant of doctrine. I do not have to be tolerant to doctrinal departure and beliefs that are not biblical. That is a form of compromise. But I am supposed to accept the individual but not his doctrinal departure! --Dr. Mal Couch (1/11) |
